About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 城端曳山祭 (Jōhana Hikiyama Matsuri)
  • Jōhana Hikiyama Matsuri, the hikiyama float festival of Jōhana (Nanto, Toyama)

History

The Jōhana Hikiyama Matsuri(城端曳山祭, jōhana hikiyama matsuri)is the grand spring festival associated with Jōhana Shinmei-gū shrine(城端神明宮, Jōhana Shinmei-gū)in the Jōhana district(城端, jōhana), Nanto(南砺市, Nanto-shi), Toyama Prefecture(富山県, Toyama-ken). Locally, Jōhana is often nicknamed “Etchū no shō-Kyōto”(越中の小京都, etchū no shō-kyōto), and the festival embodies this blend of elegance and popular energy.

The official rite is known as “Jōhana Shinmei-gū-sai no hikiyama gyōji”(城端神明宮祭の曳山行事, jōhana shinmei-gū-sai no hikiyama gyōji). It is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property(重要無形民俗文化財, jūyō mukei minzoku bunkazai)and was inscribed in 2016 on UNESCO’s Representative List as part of the “Yama, Hoko, Yatai”(山・鉾・屋台行事, yama hoko yatai gyōji). The festival is now firmly established during Golden Week, with a concentrated two-day format, renowned for its continuity (over 300 years of tradition often highlighted in local presentations).

Its identity lies in a kami-mukae procession(神迎え, kami-mukae, “welcoming of the deities”) combining several spectacular elements : lion dance(獅子舞, shishimai), mikoshi(神輿, mikoshi), kenboko(剱鉾, kenboko), kasaboko(傘鉾, kasaboko)and especially hikiyama(曳山, hikiyama). A very "Jōhana" particularity : each float is preceded by a small, refined stage, the ioriyatai(庵屋台, ioriyatai), from which flute (笛, fue) and shamisen (三味線, shamisen) music rises to accompany the iori-uta(庵唄, iori-uta), a local song with a very recognizable timbre.

Event Location and Date

  • Location : Jōhana city center(城端中心市街地, jōhana chūshin shigaichi)and Jōhana Shinmei-gū(城端神明宮, Jōhana Shinmei-gū).
  • Address : 〒939-1867 富山県南砺市城端1669.
  • Access : JR城端線 城端駅Jōhana-eki)→ approx. 10 min walk. By car : approx. 9 min from 城端SICJōhana SIC), approx. 3 min from 福光ICFukumitsu IC).
  • Date : May 4 and 5 every year. Typical timings often published : 5/4 (宵祭, yoimatsuri) in the evening, 5/5 (本祭, honmatsuri) from morning to night.

Schedule

The festival is experienced as a "double picture" : the evening of the 4th (宵祭, yoimatsuri) for the atmosphere and lights, then the main day of the 5th (本祭, honmatsuri) for the power of the procession. The whole event accompanies the shrine's ritual cycle, with a logic of departure to an otabisho (御旅所, otabisho, temporary resting place) then return to the shrine.

On May 4, the town shifts into a nocturnal atmosphere (common timeframe : 18:00–22:00) : the floats are adorned and the parade becomes more contemplative. On May 5, the morning kicks off the heart of the rite : the procession of mikoshi(神輿渡御, mikoshi togyo)starts early (common timeframe : 9:00), followed by shishimai(獅子舞, shishimai), kenboko(剱鉾, kenboko)and kasaboko(傘鉾, kasaboko), then the ioriyatai(庵屋台, ioriyatai)and hikiyama(曳山, hikiyama). The "long day" timings announced for some editions typically run from 10:00 to 22:00, with the end potentially extending into the night.

Two "signature" details are highly sought after by visitors : first, listening to the iori-uta(庵唄, iori-uta)from the ioriyatai, then the evening transformation when the floats become chōchin-yama(提灯山, chōchin-yama, “lantern mountains”) and glide through the streets. The day before or alongside the main event, an important custom involves opening places/houses linked to the float districts to the public, where sacred statues(神像, shinzō)are displayed in yamayado(山宿, yamayado).

Practical Tips

Photography

To capture the "DNA" of the matsuri, take two sets of photos : evening of the 4th for the lanterns(提灯, chōchin)and atmosphere, then day of the 5th for the density of the procession. The best shots are often near 城端神明宮Jōhana Shinmei-gū)and in the streets where the ioriyatai passes slowly (ideal for capturing faces and the singing scene). In the evening, a bright lens helps, and remember to stabilize (slower shutter speed, crowd).

Weather

Early May in Toyama can be mild, but evenings remain cool. Bring a light warm layer and a raincoat (雨具, amagu) : in light rain (少雨, shōu) the floats may continue, but in bad weather (荒天, kōten) the parade may be cancelled(中止, chūshi).

Transportation

The easiest way is by train via JR城端線Jōhana-sen)to 城端駅Jōhana-eki), then a walk (about 10 min). If driving, arrive early, as the city center is affected by the parade. Express access via 城端SICJōhana SIC)or 福光ICFukumitsu IC)is convenient, but traffic can become heavy before the evening of the 4th and the morning of the 5th.

Visitor Tips

To enjoy without rushing : May 4 in "atmosphere" mode (lanterns, sounds), then May 5 in "procession" mode (mikoshi + hikiyama). If you want to clearly hear the iori-uta(庵唄, iori-uta), position yourself in an area where the parade slows down, rather than in the middle of a very compact thoroughfare. Useful vocabulary : yoimatsuri(宵祭, evening), honmatsuri(本祭, main day), otabisho(御旅所, temporary resting place).

What to Bring

Cash, power bank, light jacket, poncho, and comfortable shoes. If you stay late on the 5th, add a small supply of water and a snack : the evening can fly by quickly.
