History

The Otabi Matsuri（お旅まつり, Otabi Matsuri）is the major spring festival of Komatsu city（小松, Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture: 石川県, Ishikawa-ken）, associated with two primary shrines: Uhashi-jinja（莵橋神社, Uhashi Jinja）and Motoori Hiyoshi-jinja（本折日吉神社, Motoori Hiyoshi Jinja）. The name "otabi" refers to a ritual "journey": the mikoshi（神輿, mikoshi）portable shrines are carried out in a sacred procession called togyō（渡御, togyō）, stopping at otabisho（御旅所, otabisho）, which serve as temporary resting places for the deity.

The festival's other hallmark is the hikiyama（曳山, hikiyama）, magnificent float-stages used for children's kabuki: hikiyama kodomo kabuki（曳山子供歌舞伎, hikiyama kodomo kabuki）. This local tradition took shape during the Edo period（江戸時代, Edo jidai）, with floats evolving over time through various influences, reconstructions, and artistic enhancements. Today, the highlight is the "line-up" of the floats: hikiyama hikizoroe（曳山曳揃え, hikiyama hikizoroe）, often accompanied by evening illuminations that give the floats a spectacular golden glow.

Proceedings

The festival spans 3 days and combines shrine devotion with a large city-wide celebration. Residents attend for protection and good fortune (厄除け・開運, yakuyoke・kaiun), and to support the children and neighborhoods during performances. The atmosphere alternates between ritual moments (revolving around mikoshi／神輿) and theatrical spectacles (revolving around hikiyama／曳山).

On the performance side, the highlights are the children's kabuki plays: hikiyama kodomo kabuki（曳山子供歌舞伎, hikiyama kodomo kabuki）. Depending on the year's schedule, performances can be seen within the neighborhoods (often near the float storehouses: 曳山小屋, hikiyama-goya) and/or during a large gathering.

The visual climax is the lining up of the floats: hikiyama hikizoroe（曳山曳揃え, hikiyama hikizoroe）at Saiku-chō（細工町, Saiku-chō）. At the end of the day, the illumination emphasizes the gold leaf, lanterns, and carvings, giving the kabuki stages a unique atmosphere. Nearby, it is common to encounter shishimai（獅子舞, shishimai）lion dances and mikoshi（神輿, mikoshi）processions in the streets.

For the most spectacular results, aim for the evening illumination during the hikiyama hikizoroe（曳山曳揃え）: lanterns and gold leaf provide a guaranteed "golden" atmosphere. Arrive before the peak crowds to find your angle. A small telephoto lens helps isolate the kodomo kabuki（子供歌舞伎）actors in the crowd, and rain protection for your gear is recommended (May in Hokuriku can bring sudden showers).

Weather

Mid-May in Ishikawa is often mild, but the region can be humid and changeable. Use a "layering" strategy: t-shirt + light jacket, and especially comfortable shoes (expect lots of standing and walking between neighborhoods and intersections).

Transport

The simplest way is to arrive at Komatsu-eki（小松駅）and do everything on foot. On the day of the main gathering, anticipate pedestrian zones and detours. If driving, use parking lots designated by the organizers (some lots near the shrines may be unavailable due to traffic restrictions).

Visitor Tips

If you want to see the kabuki up close, locate the performance venues (上演会場, jōen kaijō) and visit the neighborhoods as well: the atmosphere is often more "local" than at the central point. Useful phrase if you are lost: 「細工町交差点はどこですか？」（Saiku-chō kōsaten wa doko desu ka? = "Where is the Saiku-chō intersection?"）.

Cash (for yatai food stalls), external battery, poncho/umbrella, small towel, and (if staying until evening) an extra layer for the cool air.
