- Sanriku Fireworks Competition
History
The 三陸花火競技大会 (Sanriku Hanabi Kyōgi Taikai) is a national fireworks competition held in the city of 陸前高田市 (Rikuzentakata-shi), in 岩手県 (Iwate-ken) Prefecture. The event is closely related to the spring festival 三陸花火大会 (Sanriku Hanabi Taikai), but it stands out due to its competitive format. The best pyrotechnic companies in Japan present their creations there to be evaluated by a specialized jury and the public.
This competition was created in the context of the reconstruction of the Sanriku coast after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (東日本大震災, Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) of 2011. By organizing a spectacular and innovative event, the organizers aim to attract visitors, support the local economy, and showcase Japanese excellence in the art of fireworks, a tradition known as 花火文化 (hanabi bunka).
The competition brings together several pyrotechnic artisans (花火師, hanabishi) from different regions of Japan. Each company presents an original program combining technique, creativity, and musical synchronization. Performances often include sequences called ミュージックスターマイン (myūjikku sutāmain), fireworks choreographed to a soundtrack, as well as large shells called 尺玉 (shakudama). The competition has quickly established itself as one of the most notable pyrotechnic events on Japan's northern Pacific coast.

Schedule
The Sanriku Hanabi Kyōgi Taikai generally takes place over a full day, with the site opening in the afternoon. Before the night show, visitors can enjoy food stalls featuring Sanriku coast specialties, including seafood and regional cuisine.
The competition begins at dusk. Each pyrotechnic company has a set time to present an original work. The shows combine colors, shapes, and musical synchronization to create a true artistic performance. The displays include different types of fireworks, notably スターマイン (sutāmain), rapid barrages of fireworks, and giant shells called 尺玉 (shakudama).
The entire show can exceed 15,000 launches, offering approximately an hour and a half of continuous fireworks. At the end of the evening, the competition results are announced, and the festival concludes with a spectacular finale combining several synchronized sequences that illuminate the entire Rikuzentakata Bay.
Practical Tips
Photography
A tripod is recommended for photographing fireworks. Areas facing the bay offer the best perspectives. Long exposures allow capturing the luminous patterns created by successive launches.
Weather
In October, temperatures in the Sanriku region generally range between 10 and 18 °C. Evenings can be cool due to the wind coming from the Pacific Ocean. It is advisable to bring a warm jacket.
Transportation
Access to the site is primarily by car. Parking spaces are often limited and must be reserved in advance. Special buses may be arranged from nearby stations on event days.
Visitor Tips
Arriving in the early afternoon allows visitors to enjoy the food stalls and secure a good spot for the show. Slightly set-back areas often offer a panoramic view of all the launches.
What to Bring
Cash for stalls, warm jacket, blanket or cushion for sitting, power bank for phone, and possibly a small bag to carry souvenirs or food.
