History
The 高田松原運動公園 (Takata Matsubara Undō Kōen) is located near the famous coastal pine forest of 高田松原 (Takata Matsubara), a historic site on the coast of 陸前高田市 (Rikuzentakata-shi). For several centuries, this pine forest served as a natural barrier protecting the coast and an emblematic landscape of the region.
On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (東日本大震災, Higashi-Nihon Daishinsai) almost entirely destroyed the pine forest and a large part of Rikuzentakata city. After the disaster, the area underwent a vast urban reconstruction and development project.
In this context, the 高田松原運動公園 (Takata Matsubara Undō Kōen) was developed as a multifunctional park combining sports facilities, green spaces, and a gathering area. The park is part of the new landscape of the area, located near the 高田松原津波復興祈念公園 (Takata Matsubara Tsunami Fukkō Kinen Kōen), dedicated to the memory of the disaster and the transmission of its history.
