  • Sanriku Fireworks Festival

History

The 三陸花火大会 (Sanriku Hanabi Taikai) is a fireworks festival held in the coastal city of 陸前高田市 (Rikuzentakata-shi), in 岩手県 (Iwate-ken) Prefecture. The event was launched in 2020 to contribute to the revitalization of the Sanriku region after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (東日本大震災, Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) of 2011. The objective is simultaneously touristic, economic, and symbolic: to bring together residents and visitors around a grand spectacle celebrating the reconstruction and future of the Sanriku coast.

The festival quickly distinguished itself with its artistic ambition. It brings together some of Japan's best pyrotechnic artisans (花火師, hanabishi) and features shows synchronized with music, a Japanese specialty called ミュージックスターマイン (myūjikku sutāmain). The chosen site, 高田松原 (Takata Matsubara) Sports Park, offers a vast space allowing for large-scale displays visible across the entire bay.

Two distinct events are now organized in Rikuzentakata: the spring edition called 三陸花火大会 and, in autumn, the 三陸花火競技大会 (Sanriku Hanabi Kyōgi Taikai), a national fireworks competition where several pyrotechnic companies present their creations to a jury and the public. Together, these events have quickly gained a national reputation and attract thousands of visitors to the Sanriku coast each year.

Schedule

The Sanriku Hanabi Taikai takes place over an entire day in a festive atmosphere combining local gastronomy, cultural entertainment, and a grand night spectacle. The site gates generally open in the afternoon to allow visitors to enjoy the food stalls and activities offered in the dining area called さんりくフードビレッジ (Sanriku Food Village).

The fireworks display begins at dusk. The launches are carefully synchronized with music and organized into choreographed sequences. The displays include numerous スターマイン (sutāmain), rapid volleys of colorful fireworks, as well as large shells called 尺玉 (shakudama), capable of illuminating the entire bay sky.

A typical edition includes between 10,000 and 15,000 launches, offering approximately an hour and a half of continuous spectacle. The festival concludes with a spectacular finale combining music, bursts of launches, and giant explosions visible for several kilometers around.

Practical Tips

Photography

Areas facing the bay offer the best perspectives. A tripod is highly recommended for long exposures. A wide-angle lens allows capturing panoramic views of the fireworks, while a telephoto lens can isolate the most spectacular light patterns.

Weather

In early May, nighttime temperatures in the Sanriku region generally range between 10 and 15 °C. The wind coming from the Pacific Ocean can accentuate the feeling of coolness. A warm, windproof jacket is recommended.

Transportation

Access to the festival is simpler by car. Parking spaces often need to be reserved in advance. Public transportation exists, but buses can be very crowded after the show ends.

Visitor Tips

Arriving in the early afternoon helps avoid traffic jams and allows enjoying the food stalls. Slightly set-back areas sometimes offer a better panoramic view of the show while being less crowded.

What to Bring

Cash for stalls, a warm jacket, a blanket or cushion for sitting, a power bank for your smartphone, and possibly a small bag to carry food and souvenirs.
