- 大垣祭(おおがきまつり)
- Ōgaki Festival (Ōgaki Matsuri)
History
The Ōgaki Matsuri (大垣祭, Ōgaki Matsuri) is the grand festival of the castle town of Ōgaki, organized as the 例祭 (れいさい, reisai) of the Ōgaki Hachiman Shrine (大垣八幡神社, Ōgaki Hachiman Jinja), considered the local tutelary shrine (総鎮守, sōchinju). The tradition of floats is said to date back to 1648 (慶安元年, Keian gannen), when the reconstruction of the shrine was celebrated by the town's districts with mikoshi (神輿, mikoshi) and floats.
The heart of the festival lies in the “yama” floats (軕/山, yama; 山車, dashi): there are 13 of them, with a composition considered rare in Japan: floats linked to the former feudal power and those of the town's districts coexist in the same parade. According to local tradition, 3 floats were offered by the domain lord (藩主, hanshu) in the 17th century, while 10 floats belong to the old central districts (旧城下町, kyū-jōkamachi).
The Ōgaki Matsuri is also renowned for its onboard performances in front of the shrine: 奉芸 (ほうげい, hōgei) with karakuri (からくり人形, karakuri ningyō) and children's dances, followed by a grand nocturnal staging called 夜宮 (よみや, yomiya) where the floats are illuminated with lanterns. After losses and reconstructions linked to disasters (e.g., 濃尾震災, Nōbi jishin) and war, the festival continued its revitalization and preservation work, eventually obtaining major heritage recognitions: Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan (重要無形民俗文化財, jūyō mukei minzoku bunkazai) and inscription on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list through the ensemble 山・鉾・屋台行事 (やま・ほこ・やたいぎょうじ, yama-hoko-yatai gyōji).

Schedule
The festival generally takes place over 2 days, with a strong dimension of prayer and protection associated with the Hachiman (八幡, Hachiman) shrine and the community of the districts. The atmosphere alternates between rituals, artistic demonstrations, parades, and lively street entertainment.
Saturday often corresponds to 試楽 (しがく, shigaku): the floats gather for 奉芸 (ほうげい, hōgei) performances in front of the shrine, then proceed on a 巡行 (じゅんこう, junkō) through the city. There are also presentation moments like 掛芸 (かけげい, kakegei) depending on the areas.
Sunday corresponds to 本楽 (ほんがく, honraku): after the morning performances, the 13 floats parade in a more “official” formation through the old castle town. The evening highlight is the 夜宮 (よみや, yomiya): the lanterns (提灯, chōchin) light up, the floats return in front of the shrine for a more solemn and photogenic atmosphere, sometimes with demonstrations of float rotation and maneuvers 軕廻し (やままわし, yama-mawashi) before the final dispersion.
Practical Tips
Photos
For “classic” scenes, aim for the 奉芸 (hōgei) performances in front of the shrine: the floats are stationary, making it easier to frame the karakuri (karakuri ningyō) and details. For atmosphere, the 夜宮 (yomiya) is ideal: lanterns + crowd create a very “cinematic” effect. Arrive early to find a fixed spot, and have a plan B in case of rain.
Weather
Mid-May in Ōgaki can be mild but changeable: plan for layered clothing (evenings are cooler), and especially rain protection (poncho or compact umbrella). Queues and long periods of standing are common: comfortable shoes are essential.
Transport
The easiest way is to arrive by train at Ōgaki (Ōgaki-eki) and then do everything on foot. The areas near the station and the shrine can be very crowded: if you want to see the parade without experiencing maximum density, move 1 to 2 streets away from the “highlight” spots and wait for it to pass.
Visitor Tips
If you really want to enjoy it: come in the morning (better margin before the crowd), save the night for the yomiya, and use transition moments (moving between areas) to reposition yourself. A useful phrase: 写真いいですか (しゃしんいいですか, shashin ii desu ka) = “Can I take a picture?”.
What to Bring
Cash, power bank, poncho, small towel, and snacks. If you stay for the evening: a light jacket + possibly hand warmers (カイロ, kairo) if you get cold easily.
